Movie Plot/Summary
One morning in 1992, in Bombay, Baskhar Kumar is unexpectedly escorted by CBI officers to the Colaba branch of Magadha Bank for questioning regarding his alleged embezzlement of funds and involvement in a securities fraud scheme during his time there. The true story unfolds through a series of flashbacks, with Baskhar frequently breaking the fourth wall to offer additional commentary and insights.
Three years ago, Baskhar worked as a cashier at Magadha, one of the few private banks still operating in India after the nationalization. On the side, he assisted illiterate individuals by writing checks and completing banking forms for a fee. He lived with his wife, Sumathi, who had left her wealthy family to be with him and dreamed of starting a home-based food business. They also had a young son, Karthik, and Baskhar’s father, Prahalad, a former chartered accountant who had been left paralyzed and voluntarily mute after being swindled in a bad business deal. Financially struggling, Baskhar was deep in debt, owing money to numerous creditors.
One day, Baskhar’s biggest creditor seizes his scooter, and the promotion he’d always dreamed of is given to someone else. Humiliated and desperate, he steals two lakh rupees from the bank’s deposits and gives the money to Anthony, a smuggler, to help release illegally imported televisions at the port after his previous backers pull out. With the help of his friend Samba, a bank peon, they successfully free the TVs and make double the money, allowing them to replace the stolen cash and make a profit. Over the following months, more shipments come in, helping Baskhar pay off his debts and improve his family’s life.
