April Delongpre (Sherilyn Fenn), the eldest daughter of a prominent Alabama senator and heir to a respected Southern family, returns home after college to spend the summer at her parents’ house, preparing for her arranged engagement to Chad Douglas Fairchild (Martin Hewitt). While at the local fair with her two younger sisters, April spots a rugged carnival worker named Perry Tyson (Richard Tyson) from a distance. When April accidentally leaves her wallet on a ride, Perry finds it, looks inside to learn her name and address, and returns it to her. Curious about the mysterious drifter, April visits the carnival later that evening to speak with Perry but rebuffs his flirtations.
