Movie Plot/Summary
On October 11, 1975, Lorne Michaels arrives at NBC’s headquarters to oversee the broadcast of the debut episode of Saturday Night. The night is filled with mishaps, and both the cast and crew are struggling. Michaels’s supervisor, Dick Ebersol, cautions him that David Tebet has invited executives from around the country to watch the live show. Although Tebet offers words of encouragement to Michaels, Ebersol reveals that Tebet has little confidence in the show and is prepared to air a taped episode of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson if needed.
Garrett Morris, with his operatic theater background, reflects on his role among a group of comedic performers. Meanwhile, John Belushi remains distant, frequently starting conflicts. Jim Henson voices his frustration with the treatment he’s receiving from the writers, while those same writers are embroiled in a battle with censor Joan Carbunkle over her strict demands. Host George Carlin grows increasingly disillusioned, dismissing the entire show as a farce. Amidst all this, everyone is trying to figure out the true nature of the show. Tensions rise when Chevy Chase confronts Milton Berle, who is making advances toward his girlfriend, Jacqueline, only to be sharply rebuffed and told he’ll amount to nothing. In the midst of the chaos, Lorne Michaels receives a discouraging phone call from Johnny Carson, offering a warning with no words of encouragement.
Despite Michaels advising against it, Ebersol tries to pitch the idea of performing a sketch using a Polaroid camera for product placement. This infuriates Belushi, who storms off the set, declaring he’s quitting. As the cast searches for him, assistant Neil Levy, who has been given a joint by Paul Shaffer, panics and locks himself in a closet. The cast eventually convinces him to come out. Meanwhile, Michaels heads to a bar to unwind, where he meets comedy writer Alan Zweibel and hires him on the spot to join the show’s writing team. Michaels, along with Gilda Radner, later finds Belushi ice skating and persuades him to return to the show and sign his contract. Michaels is further encouraged to keep going with the show after a brief conversation with Henson.
