Movie Plot/Summary

The first chapter begins with an ambush on an Indian Army convoy in Chandel, Manipur, by NSCN(K) militants in June 2015. In retaliation, Major Vihaan Singh Shergill, a Para SF officer, along with his unit—including his brother-in-law, Major Karan Kashyap—launches a covert operation against the militants in the Northeast. They successfully eliminate the key leader responsible for the attack. Following their success, the Prime Minister of India honors Vihaan and his team at a formal dinner. During the event, Vihaan requests early retirement to care for his mother, who is suffering from Stage VI Alzheimer’s. In response, the Prime Minister offers him a desk job in New Delhi, allowing him to stay close to his mother, a proposal Vihaan accepts.

In the second chapter, Vihaan begins working a desk job at the Integrated Defence Staff HQ in New Delhi while also spending quality time with his family. This section briefly touches on the Pathankot attack. A nurse named Jasmine D’Almeida is assigned to care for Vihaan’s mother. Vihaan also crosses paths with Flight Lieutenant Seerat Kaur, an Indian Air Force pilot determined to honor the memory of her martyred husband, an army officer killed in an ambush. One day, Vihaan’s mother goes missing, prompting him to search for her. He accuses Jasmine of negligence, claiming that her security detail is unnecessary. Eventually, Vihaan’s mother is found under a bridge, and Jasmine reveals her true identity as an intelligence agent. The chapter also explains the rationale behind providing security to the families of special forces soldiers, due to the threats posed by North-eastern terrorists.

On September 18, 2016, four heavily armed militants launched an attack on the brigade headquarters in Uri, Jammu and Kashmir, at dawn. In a brutal assault, they killed 19 soldiers while they slept. Although the terrorists were neutralized, Karan tragically lost his life when he accidentally triggered a grenade attached to one of the militants’ rifles, which he had picked up to inspect. The entire family, including Vihaan, is devastated by his loss. In response to the attack, the Ministry vows to take decisive action against those responsible. National Security Advisor Govind Bharadwaj proposes a surgical strike, and the Prime Minister approves the plan, setting a deadline of ten days for execution.

Vihaan decides to leave his desk job and heads to the Northern Command base in Udhampur. He requests permission from the Chief of the Army Staff, General Arjun Singh Rajawat, to be part of the operation, which the general approves. Vihaan selects the elite Ghatak Force commandos from the Bihar and Dogra Regiments, along with special forces, as many of the fallen soldiers were from these regiments. He informs the team that their phones will be restricted, and the mission will be disguised as routine training exercises. The commandos then begin their rigorous training in preparation for the operation.
