Movie Plot/Summary

In 1952, in a village nestled in the Konkan, a young boy named Gotya harbors a deep love for Munni, a girl seven years his senior. When Munni’s marriage is arranged to another man, Gotya makes a failed attempt to poison him. After being reprimanded by his mother and forced into priesthood, Gotya, resolute in his desire to marry Munni, takes his sister Gita to a dense jungle known as Chetukwadi, where they plan to perform black magic beneath a peepal tree. In the process, he unintentionally ends his own life while attempting to sacrifice his sister, transforming into a vengeful spirit known as Munjya, who now haunts the tree.

Many years later, in Pune, Bittu is a shy young man working as a hairdresser at his mother Pammi’s salon, while dreaming of pursuing a career in cosmetology. He shares a strong bond with his grandmother, whom he loves dearly. Bittu harbors feelings for his childhood friend, Bela, but has never confessed his love. When Bela returns from the United States after completing her studies, she announces that her boyfriend, Kuba, has proposed to her, leaving Bittu devastated.

Bittu is haunted by recurring nightmares of a cursed peepal tree that calls his name. His family travels to their ancestral home in Konkan for his cousin Rukku’s engagement. There, his uncle Balu Kaka reveals a dark family secret: Bittu’s father went mad and died near the tree, allegedly due to the malevolent force of Munjya. Despite warnings, Bittu visits the tree and becomes possessed by Munjya. In a tragic turn, Bittu’s grandmother, revealed to be Gotya’s sister Gita, is killed by Munjya while trying to save him. Balu Kaka, devastated by her death, holds Bittu responsible. Meanwhile, Munjya demands Bittu’s help in finding and marrying Munni, using psychological torment and threatening to harm Bittu’s mother and loved ones to force his compliance.
