The story unfolds in 1920 in the mining town of Beldover, situated in the Midlands. Two sisters, Ursula and Gudrun Brangwen, discuss the concept of marriage as they make their way to the wedding of Laura Crich, the daughter of Thomas Crich, a wealthy mine owner. Laura is set to marry Tibby Lupton, a naval officer. At the church, each sister becomes intrigued by a member of the wedding party: Gudrun is drawn to Laura’s brother, Gerald, while Ursula finds herself captivated by Gerald’s close friend, Rupert Birkin.
